early photographic images of India

As India celebrates its 70th anniversary as a nation, here are some of the oldest known images of India beginning about 1859. A variety of photographers, processes, and the challenges they faced due to the diverse environments of different parts of India are briefly discussed. There is a video of the Aug. 21, 1934 stunning performance by the Fearless Three Jacksons who performed a balancing act on the Empire State Building without a net or any safety equipment.
