Pre-revolutionary Russia color images


Here are some very unique color photographs taken by a Russian photographer, Sergei Prokudin-Gorskii,  of the Russian empire a few years before the Revolution of 1917. He received special permission to travel throughout Russia, including distant provinces, to document the entire empire as the 300th anniversary of Romanov rule was approaching. The video provides some examples, discusses his process to make the color images, and the uniqueness of the images, which were all taken outside. The images document the wide variety of people of different faiths and heritage in the empire. See the video here
